Thanks so much Margaret! Yes, many suggestions on what the actual species is. Not sure I know for sure!

Kami, such unusual, sharp colors. I was going to ask what species, but I see there are many suggestions!

Kami, this critter blew me away, it's so beautiful. Your photo is great, gets my f&v. After reviewing the comments, I googled 'banana spider'. That's what this seems to be; more accurately, 'Brazilian Wandering Spider". It has a reputation for being extremely aggressive & venomous. I guess the bright colors are its message to others that they better admire it from a distance.

Arachnid is the class or phylum, whichever, that all spiders belong to. I am not sure of the specific name of this particular spider. Sorry for confusion! It is still beautiful, as long as it stays at its post, and doing its job, of "surfing the web" LOL

Thanks Chris! "Garden Spider" seems too tame of a name, based on the way it looks....*shudder*.

An arachnid is a spider. According to one of my field guides this is a Yellow Garden Spider (or an orb weaver). You have done a magnificent job of photographing this big guy.
